THE SUCCESSIn 1857, the year the hulk era came to an end in England, authorities in the new state of Victoria placed the old merchantmen, Success, and two other ancient vessels, into service as prison hulks in the port of Melbourne. It was a mercifully short lived effort, characterized by brutal treatment of the convicts and the murder of the particularly sadistic hulk manager. The vessel pictured here under sail, was fitted out by her owners as a floating museum, complete with wax dummies of suffering convicts. She sailed into ports around the world, purporting to be the Success. It is unlikely that an authentic picture of that infamous Australian prison hulk survives. |
